What makes an inexperienced person feel confident walking into a kitchen? A cookbook. A good cookbook provides elaborated instructions that guide people through each step of a recipe. Imagine the benefits of having a data visualization cookbook for assessment data which provides specific instructions for creating effective and powerful STAAR or TELPAS results graphics. The purpose of this breakout session is to help participants learn about data visualization and develop their own cookbook for using Excel.

The first part of the session will feature a quick summary of current research on effective data visualization. Through small group exercises, participants will generate their own lists of effective data visualization practice guidelines for creating assessment visuals. The second part will include demonstrations and participatory exercises using Excel to create powerful charts representing real assessment data. Additionally, participants will receive a visualization cookbook in which templates for different information graphics are saved for future use.

The learning objectives for this session are for participants to:
· gain a basic understanding of effective visualization principles
· apply effective data visualization principles to create powerful charts for assessment data
